One of my favorite books of poetry is called The Way a Door Closes by Hope Anita Smith.  This is a touching collection of poems that form a story about a boy trying to come to terms with the fact that his father has walked out on the family.  Here is an excerpt from the first poem in the book, Golden.

There’s a moment

right before morning that is

silent and still.

Grandmomma says it’s a blessing

to experience.

I hug my pillow and try to

hold on to

this moment.

I love the way the author captures the promise and peacefulness of a new day in these lines.  This story is both heartbreaking and hopeful.  The illustrations beautiful and telling.

The Poetry Friday round-up is being held at Dori Reads.

Oh, welcome to Poetry Friday, Katie!
Thanks for the introduction to this book – I’m always on the lookout for collections that speak directly to some of the experiences of our kids.
